case
Citizen Participation in the Energy Transition
Challenge
As part of the Horizon program, the following aspects were investigated: how can citizens and communities become active participants in the management and consumption of energy? In a European context where decarbonization and emission reduction are priorities, are citizens contributing to the responsible and sustainable use of energy?
Solution
We engaged a representative sample of the 18+ population, distributed across various European macro-regions, ensuring a balanced geographical distribution and including citizens, policymakers, and businesses. To measure citizen behavior in different energy use scenarios, a vignette experiment and a Conjoint-Based Choice (CBC) analysis were conducted. The data analysis provided an in-depth understanding of how citizens perceive their role in the energy transition.
Insight
The results revealed a growing interest and awareness among the population regarding sustainable energy use. The 2 experiments identified key factors that stimulate greater citizen participation in energy management. The main insights from our research provided a stimulus and validation for the EU on the importance of promoting a culture of sustainability, supported by the creation and development of more engaged and conscious energy communities.
